about

"Is This Loss?" Is the debut EP of Port Mande, the collaborative partnership between myself (Mark Dover) and pianist, composer and producer Jeremy Jordan. It was recorded primarily in the winter and spring of 2019. The album is all original music composed by the two of us. Jeremy and I met in 2013 in New York, both having recently graduated with our master degrees in classical music. Though we both love classical music dearly, we initially connected over our desire to make improvised music. We began to play together a lot, whether it was jazz, hip hop, electronic music, neo-soul, as well as contemporary classical and chamber music. The more we played together the more we realized it was a musical kinship that was important to us, and so we formed Port Mande in 2017. This EP is somewhat of a culmination of these years of friendship and musical exploration.

One thing that interested me early on in our music making was trying to find a way for the clarinet to fit into Jeremy's electronic soundscape, which is heavily MIDI and Synth based. In the months leading up to recording, I experimented with analog and digital effects pedals, and you will hear the clarinet being processed through these pedals, sometimes to the point where it's not clear whether you're hearing a clarinet or some type of synth. This kind of electric/acoustic blur is something that I have always found fascinating, and much of it can be attributed to the amazing mixes Jeremy has made throughout the EP.

The music is not really programmatic, other than to say that the bookend tracks were written during a rather difficult few months in my life. "Is This Loss?" refers to the feeling of not understanding the gravity of losing something until it's already gone. "I Am, Here Now" is somewhat of a meditation, the title being a mantra given to me by a dear friend during these months.

Earlier this spring we decided to partner with Food Bank For New York City, an amazing organization that is on the front lines of COVID Relief, providing much needed help to our great city. Through the end of 2020, 100% of our Bandcamp profits will go directly to this vital organization.

Both Jeremy and I are extremely grateful to be able to create music together, and to share it with you. Thanks so much for listening, it means a lot.
